Nā te aha…

We want to support our local tamariki and mokopuna at our kohanga and kura in:

  • The revitalisation of Hāmua and Matua Pā history and whakapapa
  • To nurture and support intergenerational identity within our whanau
  • To retain and sustain kōrero te reo māori

This action highlights, enhances and compliments Rangitānetanga.

Kei hea tēnei wāhi…

Matua Pā (Front of T-shirt)

It is situated north of Masterton, from Faulknors Garage, along Te Ore Ore Road where the old Lansdowne School to the old Masterton Hospital site and including the Waipoua River and down around the Masterton Sportsbowl area.

This Pā was a very spiritual place where our young Māori were sent from hapū in the area to learn, train and develop their specialist skills.  Tohunga, meaning specialist in a particular field.

Ko wai a Hāmua…

Hāmua

Four generations after Rangitāne came Hāmua.   Rangitāne had two wives.  His first wife, Mahue, bore a son called Kōpuparapara, and it is from this ancestor that Hāmua is derived.  Hāmua became the eponymous ancestor or originator of the Ngāti Hāmua hapū or Rangitāne o Wairarapa.
